Walter Bosse Vintage Rabbit Friends Keychain, c. 1960s

$65.00

This pair of rabbits may be small, but they have big personality! Walter Bosse, an expert craftsman from the golden age of Vienna bronzes, designed his “black/gold” series of bronze figurines to make “as many people as possible happy.” This rare design does not come up for sale very often. I have only seen this one before.

Excellent example of a Walter Bosse brass figurine on a keyring. This modernist pair of rabbits from the 1960s is in great condition with good patina. Features two rabbits sitting next to each other, kissing. Their long ears are pointed upwards and each has a small tail at the back. Very finely cast figurines were often finished with polished golden brass and not given a dark patina, as was the case with this figurine. Last image shows a page from an original Walter Bosse catalog with a collection of his animal figurines. Unmarked.

Authenticated by Modern Vienna Bronze as an original Walter Bosse design.

Description

Designed by Walter Bosse, circa 1960s.

Born in Vienna in 1904, Walter Bosse was a student of Micheal Powolny, Franz Cizek, and Richard Riemerschmid. He initially worked with ceramic sold by the Wiener Werkstätte, Augarten, and Goldscheider. His designs are some of the most important works in mid-century decorative arts. In the late 1940s Bosse began to produce countless brass miniatures (mostly animal figurines) with which he showed his admiration for the various creatures of nature. With his colleague, Karl Hagenauer, he created several figures inspired by the “zoo” theme. With the uncommon look of the collection, he focused on “making as many people as possible happy.” In partnership with Herta Baller he presented his collection at art fairs in Frankfurt, where he found a large amount of international customers. The “black/gold” interplay between polished and patinated brass was soon known around the world.
