Watch the Blackened Brass Patina Process on Carl Aubock’s Optimist/Pessimist
Very interesting video of fellow Mid Century Austrian artist Carl Auboeck’s (Aubock) patination process on his Optimist/Pessimist figures. You can watch the figures go from bright golden brass to the signature matte black color. Both Walter Bosse and Carl Auboeck were contemporaries working with brass/bronze in Vienna, Austria in the 1950s. This is the same technique Bosse used on Black-Golden Line and is the same process we still use today to patina and polish our figures!

Jonathan Adler’s New Brass Menagerie!
We’re big fans of Jonathan Adler’s brass bibelots! They seem to be very much inspired by Bosse’s older work with his collection of letter openers, corkscrew and shoehorns. It’s great that modern designers are also being inspired by brass. Their company ethics are similar in that they wanted to bring happiness to people through their designs. Don’t they all look like they could be brothers and sisters? Check out the similarities below!

Vintage Spotlight: Fox
We’re very excited to feature a new addition to our Museum today. It’s a very rare and early original Walter Bosse bronze fox. It is quite large at approximately 7″ long and 4.25″ tall, unmarked. Featured in one of Bosse’s original catalog pages (it can be found on page 111 of Walter Bosse – Leben Kunst und Handwerk). Consistent with Bosse’s early works in metal, it has the original shiny black lacquered finish painted on instead of the oxidized patina, which was developed later on. Now to just find the other two!
